- Last of the 191 trains, a total of 1,395 vehicles, rolls off production line in December 2015 marking successful conclusion of project
- Fleet serving four Tube lines forms the UK’s largest ever rolling stock manufacturing contract
- ‘S Stock’ voted as one of London’s top ten transport design icons
Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation, has successfully completed the manufacture of the final train in the new fleet of BOMBARDIER MOVIA S-Stock metro trains, which are part of LU’s vital investment to modernise the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The completion of the final train was celebrated in a ceremony held in Derby on 18th December, attended by Nick Brown, Managing Director of LU.
The new S-Stock trains have brought significant benefits to passengers on the London Underground with improved capacity (25 per cent for the Circle line), accessibility and comfort, The trains include air conditioning, spacious, walk-through carriages and enhanced passenger information displays. The new trains also provide significant energy savings from regenerative braking, and need less frequent maintenance, which reduces their ongoing costs. They are more reliable and are averaging in excess of 60,000 km between failures that affect the train service.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson MP, said: “These fantastic, air-conditioned trains are playing a vital role in ongoing modernisation of key London Underground lines. It’s no wonder they’ve proven so popular with passengers as they keep them cooler, offer more space and are far more accessible. Their production at Bombardier in Derby is helping to support crucial jobs in manufacturing and I’m looking forward to seeing the final trains roll on to the tracks next year.”
Nick Brown, Managing Director of LU, said: “Our new trains have proved an instant hit with our customers and it’s easy to see why. With air-conditioning, more space, improved accessibility and better customer information systems, they are a major part of the vital modernisation of the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. LU’s successful relationship with Bombardier creates thousands of jobs in the UK and is providing superb new services for our customers.”
Per Allmer, Head of Western Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Bombardier Transportation said, “With the successful completion of this new SSL fleet, together with our previous build of the new Victoria Line trains, we have now delivered more than 1,700 vehicles to London Underground since 2009 and amassed over two million engineering hours’ experience. As the only supplier currently providing air-conditioned stock on the Tube, we’re keen to capitalise on this experience in the future”.
Bombardier has produced a total of 191 new trains for this project, which is the UK’s largest rolling stock contract executed to date. In total, the build consisted of 1,395 vehicles: 58 eight-car S8 units for the Metropolitan line and 133 seven-car S7 units for the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines.
In November 2015, the new S-Stock trains received public recognition through Transport for London’s (TfL’s) “Design Icons” search to find London's favourite transport designs. This search was part of TfL and the London Transport Museum’s “Transported by Design” campaign, an 18-month programme of events and exhibitions that explore good design on the transport network and its role in the lives of the millions of customers who use it each day. Over two months the public voted from a shortlist of 100 transport designs that had been carefully chosen by industry experts, with the S- Stock trains voted as one of the top 10 most popular designs.
The final entry into service of the new S-Stock fleet on the District Line is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
