Our projects

Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast has substantial partnership roles in all Bombardier’s families of aircraft.  Further details on these programmes are available on the Manufacturing page. Our new development programmes include:

  • Wings for C Series commercial aircraft

Bombardier’s new C Series commercial aircraft family was launched in July 2008.  Optimised for the 100- to 149-seat market, it will offer unmatched operating economics and a significantly reduced environmental footprint.  On entry into service, it will have a 20* per cent fuel burn advantage and 50* per cent less NOx, as well as flying up to four* times quieter, compared to current in-production aircraft of similar size.

Contributing to these environmental standards, Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast is responsible for the design, development and manufacture of the advanced composite wings for the C Series aircraft.

The £520 million investment in the C Series aircraft wing programme is the largest-ever single inward investment in Northern Ireland.  The primary structural components of the C Series aircraft composite wing are being manufactured using the patented Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) process, following a complex research, development and test programme.  The wings are the largest and most complex composite structures manufactured and assembled in the UK using this particular technology.

Wing production is well under way in a new 600,000 sq ft (55,742 m2) production and assembly facility, and encompasses receipt of raw carbon fibre material, cutting and lay-up, the RTI production system, non-destructive testing, wing assembly and testing, to delivery of completed wings.

The new facility is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified to Gold standard by the US Green Building Council, and is the first Bombardier Aerospace facility to achieve this.  The LEED rating system is the foremost international programme for buildings designed, constructed, and operated for improved environmental and health performance.

    * All data and specifications are estimates, subject to change in family strategy, branding, capacity and performance during the design, manufacture and certification process.  Performance has been estimated based on a 500-nm North American operating environment.

  • Wing skins and spar components for Learjet 85 business jet

We have further developed and adapted our RTI technology to manufacture the composite wing skins and spars for Bombardier’s new Learjet 85 business jet.  Production of these wing components also takes place in our Belfast wing facility.

  • Centre fuselage for Challenger 350 business jet

Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast has designed and is manufacturing the centre fuselage for this new business jet, which features a number of enhancements to the Challenger 300.   The new aircraft has an increased maximum take-off weight to allow full fuel for eight passengers, new winglets, an eight per cent engine thrust increase, a complete cabin re-design including increased window height, and a new avionics package.

  • Composite horizontal stabiliser and other components for Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets

We are also designing and manufacturing components for Bombardier’s new Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets.

At Bombardier, it is our mission to provide trains that prioritise comfort and accessibility for today’s passengers and transport systems that improve connectivity by bringing people more quickly and reliably to their destinations. And in all our products and equipment you will see tangible evidence of our commitment to delivering more sustainable transport.

We would like to share some of our projects and their unique challenges. In this way we hope to share with you our great pleasure in delivering transportation solutions that drive the evolution of mobility and make a difference to the communities they serve.

  • BOMBARDIER AVENTRA – World Class Proven Innovation

With demand for rail services at an all-time high, train operators are under increasing pressure to provide additional capacity together with highly reliable services.

Bombardier has an unparalleled reputation in manufacturing and maintaining trains for cities and networks throughout the world. We have already delivered more than 2,000 new generation Electrical

Multiple Units (EMUs) for routes around London and the South East of England alone, with a proven track record and award-winning levels of reliability. Yet we set ourselves an even greater challenge: To develop a new generation of commuter train – the BOMBARDIER AVENTRA – that would outperform even our own best-in-class solution.

The best global EM U technology has been consolidated in one concept to create the new world-class AVENTRA commuter train. Our wide-ranging expertise enables us to exploit advances in technology and adopt internationally proven solutions.

  • London Olympics - We move London

During the London 2012 Olympics, Bombardier trains and services teams in the UK helped London’s rail transport operators carry more passengers than ever before without any major disruption.

Bombardier supported 9 train operators and more than 800 Bombardier trains on key routes into and around London, helping London’s rail transport network carry more passengers than ever before without any major disruption.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London: "Whilst the combined team is already highly committed and used to working behind the scenes to deliver reliable, safe trains, the Olympics encouraged them to raise the bar even higher."

Steve Murphy, Managing Director at London Overground Rail Operations Limited (LOROL) said: “Thank you for a job very well done over the Olympics. Our 378s carried more than 6.7 million passengers during the Games on over 17,000 services and delivered a PPM of more than 98%. In addition, your staff at all key locations were unfailingly proactive and committed.”

  • FLEXITY Swift for Manchester

Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM ’s) Metrolink system is set to become the UK’s largest tram network by 2016 under its current expansion programme. As part of the expansion plans, Bombardier and its consortium partner Vossloh Kiepe are supplying a total of 94 FLEXITY Swift trams for the city - the travelling public is already impressed with the modern, reliable vehicles, which first appeared on Manchester’s popular light rail system around 2 years ago.

  • Victoria Line Upgrade

The Victoria Line Upgrade (VLU) started in earnest in 2005. Transportation demands in London are increasing dramatically, so to meet projected growth; London Underground set the goal of increasing overall passenger capacity by 21 % through the introduction of a 33 trains per hour timetable.

As the first upgrade of an automatic railway the VLU was a significant and challenging undertaking for our teams, with the project scope including a fleet of 47 new trains built by Bombardier Transportation, new automatic signalling and line control system as well as significant infrastructure works.

  • Fleet maintenance – The hidden service differentiator

Bombardier Transportation is used to the attention directed to the new trains it delivers worldwide. Yet it has an equally significant Services business, dedicated to supporting customers throughout the lifecycle of their rolling stock.

Bombardier’s serice capability enables its customers to benefit not only from extensive expertise in engineering but also from a global materials supply network and component overhaul capability. In the UK alone, Bombardier services more than 5,200 vehicles – from intercity and regional trains, including electrical and diesel multiple units, to metros and light rail vehicles. Fleet management packages can range from full service provision, ensuring fleets are service-ready every day, through to the supply of specific spares and/or technical support.
