Bombardier Wins Excellence in Technology Prize at London Transport Awards

March 16, 2015 London Transportation,  Press Release

  • Bombardier Transportation recognised for contribution to London Underground project
  • Key upgrade project includes the UK’s largest ever rolling stock contract

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation is celebrating its success at this year’s London Transport Awards. Organised by Transport Times Events and held in London on March 5th, the ceremony recognises transport excellence and rewards innovative initiatives that have driven mobility progress. This year, Bombardier Transportation won the Excellence in Technology award in recognition for supplying the high performance trains used in London Underground’s prestigious Sub Surface Line (SSL) investment programme.

In the largest rolling stock contract executed to date in the UK, Bombardier is delivering 191 new trains, with 58 eight-car S8 units for the Metropolitan Line and 133 seven-car S7 units for the other sub-surface lines. This new fleet of high performance trains incorporates the latest technology and offers improved mobility for London’s passengers. The trains, which will be the London Underground’s first air-conditioned fleet, are scheduled for completion in 2016.

David Waboso, Capital Programmes Director at London Underground, said, “Our new trains, built by Bombardier in Derby have created thousands of jobs in the UK and have proved an instant hit with our customers, and it’s not hard to see why. These comfortable, spacious, accessible, air-conditioned trains will be serving 40 percent of the Tube network by the end of next year and are a major factor in making the sub-surface Tube lines fit for the demands of the future. I’m hugely pleased that we have been recognised by the London Transport Awards for this world-class new rolling stock.”

The 310 kilometer London Underground (LU) sub-surface network, which encompasses the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, carries 1.3 million people a day and accounts for 25 percent of LU’s ridership. A full upgrade of these lines, due for completion in 2018, is providing a significant capacity increase as well as a substantial improvement in the passenger experience.
