Success for Bombardier and its industry partners at the 2015 ‘Most Interesting’ Awards

November 30, 2015 London Transportation,  Press Release

  • Independently Powered Electric Multiple Unit (IPEMU) research programme triumphs in the Train Operations category
  • IPEMU project recognised for its successful trial in passenger service in 2015

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation and some of its key industry partners were recognised at this year’s ‘Most Interesting’ Awards, organised by The Rail Engineer magazine and held at the Roundhouse in Derby on 19th November 2015.

Bombardier, Abellio, Future Railway and Network Rail won the award for the Independently Powered Electric Multiple Unit (IPEMU) project, which is part of a cross-industry research programme supporting the Rail Technical Strategy. Bombardier worked in partnership with Network Rail, industry research group RSSB through the FutureRailway programme, service operator Abellio Greater Anglia and the Rail Executive on the project, with the train successfully completing a trial passenger service operation on the Manningtree to Harwich Town branch line in January 2015.

The judges gave the award to the IPEMU project in recognition of it having successfully demonstrated the battery-driven train propulsion concept to the UK railways. Network Rail Principal Engineer James Ambrose said: “After months of engineering and testing, the IPEMU ran in trial passenger service earlier this year just as we would like it, thanks to the hard work of all parties involved. We are always looking for ways to reduce the cost of running the railway and make it greener too. The IPEMU has the potential to contribute significantly towards both those goals.”

Per Allmer, Head of Western Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Bombardier Transportation said, “The IPEMU demonstrates what battery technology offers the rail industry. Following extensive design and testing work, the train successfully completed a trial passenger service, proving the viability of the concept. It’s a technology we can incorporate onto future new-build trains, such as our BOMBARDIER AVENTRA platform and retro-fit into existing modern rail vehicles, adding value to existing fleets.”
