The Flight Experience
Bombardier builds relationships with schools across Northern Ireland through The Flight Experience, its award-winning programme. Run by the company’s education liaison officer, its key objectives are to support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics curriculum, and to generate career interest in these subject areas.
The programme comprises a wide variety of practical initiatives and interactive activities. These include a Flight exhibition at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum displaying original iconic artefacts, historic aircraft and flying machines, together with high-quality archive footage of some of the key milestones in aviation history. In addition to touring the gallery, schoolchildren also get the opportunity to take a ride in a flight simulator.
The Flight Experience Challenge encourages schoolchildren to design, build and fly their own model aircraft. Entrants are challenged to use recyclable, everyday objects and are judged on design, construction, flight and livery. The competition is held annually at W5 Interactive Discovery Centre in the Odyssey Complex, Belfast, where a Science of Flight exhibit is also housed.
High Flyers is aimed specifically at upper primary, Key Stage 2, and focuses on a series of workshops around the theme of flight. Delivered to classes over several terms, the company’s education liaison officer also provides an abbreviated version for summer schools and after-school clubs.
STEMNET and STEM Ambassador Programme
STEMNET is a government initiative aimed at inspiring and exciting young people about STEM. The initiative is aimed at enabling them to develop their creativity, problem-solving and employability skills, and widening their career choices.
W5 Interactive Discovery Centre coordinates the STEMNET programme in Northern Ireland and encourages professionals with STEM skills to volunteer as STEM Ambassadors and work with post-primary schools to promote STEM subjects. These ambassadors come from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines and are an invaluable resource for teachers to help inspire schoolchildren, and highlight the range of careers available to them in these subject areas.
As a strong supporter of STEM in education, Bombardier was one of the first companies to sign up to the STEMNET initiative, which is now an integral part of its educational programme. Since November 2011, it has worked closely with W5 to provide around 150 STEM Ambassadors – from apprentices to senior management – who go to schools promoting STEM.
Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast annually offers a number of development opportunities to passionate, ambitious and talented graduates within Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, Customer Services and Administration. Our graduate recruitment campaign begins in October each year. Further information is available on the Graduate programme page.
